Why is My Car Leaking Water?

In most cases, If your car is leaking water, the cause is not something serious. The car’s air conditioning system creates condensation whenever it’s activated. When the system is on, you will likely see small puddles of water near the back of the engine compartment. Another possible cause of water near the tailpipe could be exhaust condensation. Once the muffler warms up, this should diminish. However, if your vehicle is leaking other fluid, it could be a cause for concern. To identify the issue, turn to the experts at Rackley Auto Group Reno.

Identifying the Cause of Leaking Water

Water leaking from under the car? We’ll show you how to determine the source.

  • Place a sheet of paper under the leak. If the fluid is something other than water, the color will show up in the paper. The coolant will be blue, green, or yellow.
  • If more than a small amount of water is coming from your exhaust, coolant may be burned with the fuel because of a blown gasket. If this happens, you should notice significant amounts of water and white smoke coming out of the exhaust pipe.
  • While the coolant is usually easy to spot due to its color, you can always check the level to make sure. If you notice that the level is not quite where it should be, have your vehicle evaluated by a professional at our service center.
  • Another possible cause could be that the windshield wiper fluid reservoir is cracked. Water could be making its way into your windshield wiper fluid. When temperatures drop, that water can freeze and expand, which could crack the plastic container. The fluid you see should be light blue or light green and located near the front tires.

If you have determined that it is something other than simply condensation, it is a good idea to bring your car in for an inspection.
